The City of Mason City is taking applications for the Police Officer civil service hiring list, which requires a physical ability test and written exam for non-certified officers. The list created from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time Police Officer positions within the Mason City Police Department. The Mason City Police Department serves a community of 28,000 and is located just two hours from Des Moines and the Twin Cities. We offer a very competitive salary scale that starts at $66,700 for non-certified officers. Increased pay for Iowa certified officers up to $88,700 per year, based on years of law enforcement experience. Added compensation for college education and shift differential is also available. $5,000 relocation package and $9,000 for certified officers. In addition, we offer a $2,000 annual stipend for all officers choosing to purchase a home to live in Mason City. Minimum Requirements:

· 21 years of age or older at time of hire.

· High school diploma or GED

· Valid State driver’s license and acceptable driving record

· Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol (Chapter 400.17 of the Iowa Code).

· No felony convictions.

· No disqualifying misdemeanors within the last seven years.

· Meet the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) physical and vision requirements.

· Non-certified officers – Pass the written POST test and ILEA required physical fitness test.

· Certified officers – Only need to participate in the physical agility test for baseline purposes, and do not need to take the written POST test.

· Pass a post-offer physical/drug test, polygraph and psychological evaluation.

· Live within 30 miles of Mason City within six month of hire (see map).

The written POST and physical agility testing will be conducted on the morning of May 15th with interviews following in the afternoon for passing candidates. Candidates will receive additional details about the testing once an application is received.

Pay: $30.17/HR – $47.14/HR (Effective July 1, 2024)

Hiring Bonus for Currently Certified Police Officers: $10,000 hiring bonus to any certified peace officer who successfully completed the hiring process, accepts a position with the City, and whose certification is from the State of Iowa or a state that the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy recognizes and has a reciprocal agreement with.

Lateral Transfer: New employees, who at the time of hire, are currently certified law enforcement officers and have appropriate sworn experience as stated below are eligible for lateral transfer if they meet the following conditions:

Effective July 1, 2024:

  • Completion of 2-4 years of service shall be paid at Step 3: $32.95/HR
  • Completion of 4-5 years of service shall be paid at Step 4: $35.80/HR
  • Completion of 5 or more years of service shall be paid at Step 5: $38.46/HR

Physical Examination Date: The physical agility exam will be administered at 6:00 p.m. on April 17, 2024, and at 12:00 p.m. on April 20, 2024, at Dr. John & Jean Marshall Wellness Center located on Iowa Western Community College’s campus. Candidates who are currently certified peace officers through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy will not be required to attend the physical agility exam. Candidates who are certified peace officers from a different state will be required to attend one of the physical exams

Responsibilities: The work of this class involves responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals and the general enforcement of laws and ordinates in a designated area or an assigned shift or on special assignments.

Requirements:

  • Certified peace officer through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy or by a law enforcement agency accepted by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • United States Citizen
  • Must be at least 21 years of age by the day they graduate from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) or if they already graduated from the ILEA or a law enforcement academy accepted by the ILEA, 21 years of age by their first day of employment with the City of Council Bluffs
  • Must be able to obtain a Driver’s License from state of residence
