Pay: $30.17/HR – $47.14/HR (Effective July 1, 2024)
Hiring Bonus for Currently Certified Police Officers: $10,000 hiring bonus to any certified
peace officer who successfully completed the hiring process, accepts a position with the City, and
whose certification is from the State of Iowa or a state that the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy
recognizes and has a reciprocal agreement with.
Lateral Transfer: New employees, who at the time of hire, are currently certified law
enforcement officers and have appropriate sworn experience as stated below are eligible for
lateral transfer if they meet the following conditions:
Effective July 1, 2024:
Completion of 2-4 years of service shall be paid at Step 3: $32.95/HR
Completion of 4-5 years of service shall be paid at Step 4: $35.80/HR
Completion of 5 or more years of service shall be paid at Step 5: $38.46/HR

Candidates Certified Through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy: An applicant who has
successfully completed training at the Iowa law enforcement academy or another training facility
certified by the director of the Iowa law enforcement academy does not need to retake a civil
service examination upon changing employment from one Iowa law enforcement agency to
another Iowa law enforcement agency, or upon becoming employed by more than one Iowa law
enforcement agency simultaneously, if the applicant has previously passed a civil service
examination when the applicant was initially hired as a certified peace officer and if, without a
break of not more than one hundred eighty days from prior law enforcement service, the
applicant is hired by another Iowa law enforcement agency. However, the applicant shall
complete and pass the applicable physical examination prior to beginning the new employment.
Candidates will still be required to meet the contingencies of employment.
Physical Examination Date: The physical agility exam will be administered at 6:00 p.m. on
December 4, 2024, and at 11:00 a.m. on December 7, 2024, at Dr. John & Jean Marshall
Wellness Center located on Iowa Western Community College’s campus.
Responsibilities: The work of this class involves responsibility for the protection of life and
property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals and the general enforcement of laws
and ordinates in a designated area or an assigned shift or on special assignments.
Requirements:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of
education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
necessary to perform the work.
United States Citizen
Must be at least 21 years of age by the day they graduate from the Iowa Law Enforcement
Academy (ILEA) or if they already graduated from the ILEA or a law enforcement academy
accepted by the ILEA, 21 years of age by their first day of employment with the City of
Council Bluffs
Must be able to obtain a Driver’s License from state of residence
